Tips on covering the books

I would like to point out a few things before I start. Firstly, as I have always said, it’s better to read one book 5 times rather than reading 5 books once. Whichever book you have selected on a particular subject, keep reading it again and again till you are so thorough that you can point out what is given where.

The tips which I am suggesting here are entirely based on the way I read a particular book. Your style of reading/studying might be very different. So if you have already adopted a strategy, and it is different from mine, kindly ignore what I have to say. The only goal is to complete the book and revise it, whichever method it might be.

The books I am covering here are the ones I have suggested in my earlier posts. They are:

  1. Bipin Chandra’s India’s Struggle for Independence
  2. DD Basu’s Constitutional Law of India
  3. Statistics by Spectrum
  4. India Yearbook, Min of I&B, GoI
  5. Civil Services Chronicle (magazine)
  6. Economic Survey

Bipin Chandra’s India’s Struggle for Independence

The first time I attempted to read this book, I could reach only the 70th page before I surrendered. In my opinion, those who do not have the HABIT of reading books (and I am one of them), will find it very difficult to cover it in one go. So the method was to concentrate on one chapter at a time and adopt a strategy to not only understand but gain an insight as to why the events described happened.

After reading 1 or 2 pages at a time, I thought of the questions which might be asked if the examiner happened to focus on those 2 pages. I made a notebook in which I covered this book chapter-wise. I wrote all the questions from a particular chapter I could think of. This way on an average I made 7-8 questions from each chapter.

For example, when I was reading the chapter on Non-cooperation movement, few incidents were described which forced the launch of NCM. Then the incidents during the movement were described and why it was finally called off. The reaction of various leaders and parties was also covered in the book. So I made 3-4 questions from it such as:

Q. Describe the events which led to the launch of NCM.

Q. How was the NCM different from earlier movements?

Q. Why was NCM called off and what was the reaction to Mahatma Gandhi’s decision?

Q. What was the impact of NCM on Indian National Movement?

This way I could link all the different aspects of NCM and every other movement/ incident. This helps in not only gaining an insight but also remembering the points to write in the exam so as to present a complete answer.

After I finished all the chapters (left one or two in the middle which I found were too specific and hence not useful), I had with me around 230 questions. I went through the previous 10 years’ question papers and was happy to find that not even a single question was asked on INM which was not there in my notebook.

The other thing which I did was to note the name of the persons I came across while reading the book, on the last page of my notebook. So if Indulal Yagnik was mentioned on, say page x and again 300 pages later on page y, I noted it down as Indulal Yagnik (x,y…). This way I could remember everything about the person mentioned in the book as well as relate the events in which the said person was involved.

Whether you finish the book in one go or read it in between other things entirely depends on you. The aim should be to cover it well before the exams and be able to revise the questions you made.

But keep in mind that you should not concentrate only on making the questions. Question-making is only to help you remember the content and relate the events. Concentrate on the content and when you have finished reading all the things which were related directly to each other, then only think of the questions. As I said, I made only 230 or so questions, which makes it 1 question/ 3 pages approximately.

DD Basu’s Constitutional Law of India

I must have read this book at least 10 times during my 3 attempts. It is one of the best books I have come across and certainly THE base book for the Civil Services exam, especially when you have public administration as an optional.

There is no need to remember each and everything given in the book and neither do we have to remember the Articles verbatim.

Instead, focus on the outline of an Article and only in the case of important Articles do we need to remember the details. Important Articles would be FRs, DPSPs, election of the President, CoM, office of profit, budget, CAG, EC, UPSC, FC, emergencies, etc

There are 2 versions of DD Basu available. I had the detailed one. There is another one which is concise. Either will do. But I covered the Articles Part-wise, i.e. Article 1, 2, 3…and so on.

Firstly, I mugged up the Parts of the Constitution. The Constitution is divided into 22 Parts. Remembering the Parts helps in recalling the Articles quickly. So I remembered that Part III is FRs (Articles 12 to 35), Part V is The Union (Articles 52 to 151), Part XVIII is Emergency Provisions (Articles 352 to 360), etc

Then I started with the Articles. I covered 20 Articles at a time and continued revising them till I was able to recall all 20 without looking in the book. Then went ahead and after I had finished first 50 Articles, tried to recall all 50 in one go. Then first 100 and so on.

As I said, no need to remember the Articles verbatim. You need to know that Article 72 is regarding the power of the President to grant pardons and roughly in what kind of cases, i.e. court-martials, death sentences and cases to which the executive power of the Union extends.

This way I remembered around 400 of the 440 or so Articles in the Constitution and left the ones I considered not important, especially the ones in the end.

Shortcut: One of them is that many Articles of the Union correspond to Articles of the States. So from Article 72 onwards add 89 to get the corresponding Article at the State level. Keep doing it till Article 111. Article 201 is extra which relates to the President’s powers when a Bill has been reserved for his consideration by the Governor under Article 200. So after this, from Article 112 onwards add 90 to get the corresponding Article at the State level.

I concentrated on the Constitution as many of the questions can be answered through the Articles in the Constitution by directly quoting the Articles in the introduction part of the answer.

No need to go too deeply into the explanations provided in the book. Just read them for understanding what the Article is about. Thereafter, you can leave it out when you revise. Also, there’s no need to remember all the cases relating to various Articles. Only very important ones such as Golak Nath, Keshvananda Bharti, Minerva Mills, etc and the recent IR Coelho, TMA Pai, PA Inamdar, etc need to be remembered.

Also, only the important Amendments such as 42nd, 44th, 86th, etc and the recent ones 91st, 92nd, 93rd and 94th need to be remembered.

For more on the Constitution, refer http://indiacode.nic.in/coiweb/welcome.html

Statistics by Spectrum

One of the biggest mistakes which many commit is merely “reading” the questions in the book and not practising the statistics questions by attempting them in an exam-like situation.

I remember in XI standard when we had vectors. I just read the questions in R D Sharma and they appeared to be very easy. However, in the test when I attempted the questions, I couldn’t even go beyond the 1st step. Same is the case with statistics. If you think questions are very easy, most often than not, when you attempt the questions in an exam-like situation, serious doubts are going to emerge.

Keeping the above point in mind, covering the book on statistics by spectrum is more than enough. Statistics was my strength in the 2nd paper and therefore, first analyze your ability, and then try to execute your plan.

The basic thing to remember is that 80% of the questions asked in a particular year are repeated ones. They might change the numbers, etc but the graph/diagram more or less remains the same.

Statistics in 2009 was the easiest compared to 2007 and 2008 (2008 was the toughest according to me), and the only thing to guard against was the time factor as the graphs and questions were very simple, but at the same time, very lengthy. In such situations, always take a scale such that the bars will be small and shading, etc should be done freehand.

The method which I adopted to cover spectrum was based on the decision that I would practice/ go through statistics thrice-

  • In July, I would read as well as practice some of the questions
  • In October, I would mostly read yet, solve few of the questions
  • On October 23rd, during the time between the 2 papers, I would revise statistics as I always started GS II with statistics.

July:

I went through the basics given in spectrum, such as the definitions, different types of bar diagrams, area diagrams, ogives, tables, etc. Thereafter, I went through the sample questions and made it a point that I would READ 2 questions and SOLVE the 3rd question. Always solve the question in an exam-like situation, with pencil, scale, graph paper, etc.

I applied the same rule to all the previous years’ question papers given in the book. Every year, 1 or 2 questions are asked which are different from previous years. I noted such questions on the front page of the book, as page 97- q 6…and so on…

At the end of this exercise, I had a list of around 100 questions which I would again read/solve in October along with revising the basics.

October:

I went through the basics again and went through the 100 questions which I had identified as “different” from previous years’ papers. I again applied the rule of READING 2 questions and SOLVING the 3rd one. At this point of time, I was comfortable with most of the questions and formulae and ticked the questions which I felt I should revise again just before the exam. So I shortened the revision list to about 30 questions.

October 23rd:

During the time between the 2 papers, I revised the basics in 10 minutes (I had written all the different types of graphs/diagrams and formulae on a paper) and READ the 30 questions from my list. This way I went into the exam-hall in the statistics “frame of mind” and attempted the questions straightaway.

This is one of the reasons why I said earlier in the importance of mains post that howsoever the earlier papers go: good or bad, always concentrate on the next paper and prepare yourself for it.

India Yearbook, Min of I&B, GoI

Before I begin, I would like to point out that this book should be read thoroughly only for the prelims. For the mains, only government programmes and few chapters need to be covered.

So if you are taking the prelims in 2011, go through the whole book. But if you are going to take the Mains in 2010, no need to cover the whole book at present.

For prelims

GS prelims in 2008 and 2009 had many questions directly asked from the India Yearbook. The only issue was that any line from any page was turned into a question. So a true or false statement such as salt water crocodiles are found in Andaman and Nicobar islands was from the 1st chapter Land and the People (under Fauna).

Therefore, I covered all the chapters in the book except the one on States and UTs (Chapter 30 in 2010 Yearbook).

I put a lot of emphasis on making notes as it is very difficult to cover a 1000 page book in 3-4 days in the last month or week before the exam. Moreover, 99% (or even more than that) of the India Yearbook remains the same year after year.

So I went through the India Yearbook 2009 and reduced it to 1/10th of its size by making notes. Special attention needs to be given to the following things:

  • Government programmes: write on a paper at the end of the book all the government programmes you come across. Mid-day meal scheme may be described on page x and again 400 pages later on page y. So I noted it as Mid-day meal scheme (x, y…)
  • Agricultural data is presented very nicely. I wrote on a paper all the values. So rice: 97 million tonnes, wheat: 74 million tonnes, eggs: 46 billion, banana:1st, grapes/area: 1st, etc can be easily mugged up.
  • Various government institutes/ bodies are specified such as NSD, ASI, ZSI, National Library, National Museum, NBT, KCCs, etc. I noted the names and page number on a page and their HQ (if any).
  • Factual data such as India’s land area, EEZ, land frontier, coastline, energy production, major and minor ports, international airports, teledensity, etc need to be noted.

For mains

If you already read the IYB for prelims, just go through what you underlined and revise your notes. But if you did not, then apart from the GOVERNMENT SCHEMES and agricultural data, read the following chapters from IYB 2010:

Chapters 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 10, 11 (NCES only), 13 (terms like FIPB, FCCB, ECB, ADR/GDR, FDI, etc), 18, 24, 25 and 28.

Note: I have not specified chapters 16, 17, etc as I have assumed that you must have covered all the government schemes such as NRHM, JNNURM, etc irrespective of where they are given in the book.

In Mains 2009 many questions could be answered on the basis of information provided in the IYB, e.g. significance of coastal regions, UMPPs, BSUP, fruit production in India and NNRMS.

But if you don’t have time, newspapers should be preferred over standard books such as the IYB.

Civil Services Chronicle (magazine)

Since I read the Civil Services Chronicle, I am going to give some tips on how to go about it. If you read some other magazine, not a problem. You may apply the same strategy if you want to.

Regarding CSC, it’s important because newspapers are not Civil Services exam oriented. So they are bound to miss a few things which may be important for the exam. Also, it is sometimes possible that you might miss out on an important development, such as an appointment, etc. So reading CSC (or any 1 exam oriented magazine) is beneficial.

I always aimed at finishing the chronicle in a day or two (apart from newspaper reading on that day). If you find it time-consuming, always keep in mind that 3 days is the maximum time you should be spending to go through an issue.

My strategy to go through CSC was as follows:

  • While reading it, tick mark the articles which are good as many times articles too specific to a given place or even issues with very little probability of being asked in the exam are covered. While reading, underline the important lines then and there. Concentrate only on the facts and not what should be done, what is good, what might happen, if, but, etc.
  • I used to write on a paper all the important issues (just the heading and page number) and on another paper the names of all the important persons mentioned in the issue which could be asked in the exam. For example, winners of Bharat Ratna and Padma Vibhushan are important, but there’s no need to remember about each and every person who has won the Padma Bhushan or Padma Shri. Similarly, winners of Nobel Prize, Magsaysay Award (only if given to an Indian), Jawaharlal Nehru prize for international understanding, etc are important, but not some obscure science award or social service award or Magsaysay award to someone from Malaysia, Thailand or Philippines.

REVISION of the issues just before the exam is very important. Just one reading wouldn’t do any good. So revise only what you have marked and only the articles which you have written on the page. 3 issues of the magazine should be covered in 1 day while revising (apart from newspaper reading/revision) or it’s going to be unmanageable.

Economic Survey

You should aim at finishing the Economic Survey in 4 days (apart from newspaper reading on those days). Only 10-15% of it is useful for the exam.

  • If you feel you need to improve your knowledge of economics, take note of the terms you come across. For example, in ES 2009-10, page 2 has terms such as GDP at factor cost, broad money, capital formation, RD, FD, PD, current account balance, etc. If you do not know what they mean, look up on the net. No need to remember their values and advanced estimates etc. for all the years. Just remembering the last year’s actual values would suffice.
  • Concentrate on the boxes. But do not pay attention to tables such as the one on page 3. No need for such in-depth knowledge.
  • Pay special attention to the steps recommended by various bodies to the government. Example, 13th FC on page 18, UID on page 26, boxes on pages 30 and 34, measures to control inflation on page 75, etc.
  • Terms used in between such as CoP 15 on page 19, Project Arrow on page 57, NHB Residex on page 72, BPLR and FCNR(B) on page 94, etc should not be missed.
  • Do not even look into the statistical appendix.
  • Most important chapters: 1, 2, 6, 8 and 11.

Do not forget to REVISE what all you have marked at least twice before the exam. Therefore, whichever book you select for any given subject, keep in mind that it should be read at least 3 times.

hi varun…i had the constitutional law of india, 7th edition…articles r given serially…
intro to the constitution is the other one…concise and articles r given according to the topic and not serially…
i guess either one is fine…

  5. 169 says:

    Hi Anay,
Congratulations for your stupendous success and thanks for writing this insightful article on cruising through dense but standard text.

I have one off the track query. For mains exam, one should read paper (in depth) from previous year’s May month or from Oct month?

I am planning to go through newpaper archive on important issues (dealt in magazines like Chronicle).
Do you think it would be worth the effort?

    Kindly reply.
I am not able to figure this out from Main’s question paper.

    Thanks in advance.

    • anaydwivedi says:

      hi rahul,
i went thru newspaper articles only from may 2009 to oct (1st week)2009 for the 2009 mains…tht much time is sufficient according to me…
i could answer almost all the questions frm current events based on in-depth newspaper reading during the said period…

  6. Viraj Deshpande says:

Hi Anay, i hav been reading ur posts for quite sometime now..i am preparing for ’11 exam, possibly the C.S.A.T. .my question is hw many newspapers should one ideally read..i am following Hindu and TOI..should i read ET also, given the fact tht 2010 g.s. Paper had focused on eco.

    • anaydwivedi says:

      hi viraj…
there’s no definite rule as to how many newspapers to read…other newspapers like indian express, etc are also good…
but surely one can’t go through 5-6 newspapers daily…my suggestion would be to go thru ET as well…the editorials are exceptional…
if u can finish the 3 newspapers in less than 2 hours, then u r surely gng good…ET is good also coz u can get hold of the terms and look up on the net wht they mean…tht way u needn’t go through other books on economics, etc

  7. Sangita Goswami says:

    Dear Anay,

The book you mentioned “Constitutional Law by D.D.Basu”.Is it anyway different from the most common book ” Introduction to the Constitution of India” by the same author?

    Regards,
    Sangita

    • anaydwivedi says:

      hi sangita,
constitutional law has got the articles part-wise…ie serially…
intro to the constitution on the other hand has got the articles in random order and is concise…i haven’t been thru this book…but a friend has it…i will go thru it in the evening and get back to u…

    • anaydwivedi says:

      hi sangita,
i went thru both the books…there r some good things and not so good things abt each of them…
the good thing abt intro to the const is tht it is updated and has got quite a few things not there in const law of india…the imp parts like FR, DPSP, emergency, etc r explained nicely…but its drawback is tht the Articles r not given serially..and many r missing…so i dnt knw how to go abt mugging up if u r using intro to the const…
about const law…mugging up is very easy and u can use the shortcut i have already given in the post…but yes, it is not updated and has got too much detail which u need to leave out…
so even i m in a fix as to which one is better…i wud say get both and mug up Articles serially frm const law and just glance through intro to the const for any additional info…

  8. Devendra. says:

sir i am eagerly waiting for the news paper reading stratery.. plz try to give strategy for the hindu news paper also based on web vesion… it will be of immense help..

  9. Sangita Goswami says:

    Thanks Anay…

  10. Viraj Deshpande says:

Hi anay, thnx for the prompt reply.will try to incorporate your suggestion in my preparation…as regards d.d.basu’s constitutional law of india book,hw is it exactly different frm the introduction to constn. Book..if the question is only of serial arrangement of articles, thn the bare act by P.M.Bakshi can b the solution.

  11. sandeep says:

regarding csc mag, is it ok if i cover from may to sep or should i have started earlier

    • anaydwivedi says:

may to sept is ok…but if u have time, just go thru the jan to april ones leaving out the prelims part…such as geography, history, etc…they wudnt take too much time neways…

  12. Dreamz says:

    Hi Anay,

Let me congratulate you for being honest and true in sharing your study methods.

    I appretiate your efforts.

    Well , I have some doubts :

    1. My reading speed is 1 page per 6 mins and by that equation I finish around 50 pages per day.
Is it very low , avg or normal? How many pages you were able to finish on avg?

    2.Is frontline helpful ?

    3. Is it ok to use different colour pens ,penciles ?

    4. Is calculator allowed in GS paper for stats?

    5. I am not able to find a few topics of syllabus in pubad books that I have (Mohit, Prasad & Prasad, Arora ,Awasthi & Maheshwari)

Can you please suggest PA books which covers WHOLE syllabus?

    Thanks

    • anaydwivedi says:

      hi there…thanks
      1. it doesnt matter how fast or slow u read…wht matters is how much u retain and whether u r able to link and remember the things u read…as i said, no need to cover many books…stick to few, but revise…
      2. i dont think frontline is helpful. it isn’t exam oriented and whtever it covers..u can get tht in the newspapers as well..instead, go through an exam oriented magazine…
      3. there’s no time in the exam to use different colour pens, etc…also, it is something u do after u have written all the content u could…which in itself isn’t going to be easy due to paucity of time..
      4. yes, calculator is allowed in each and every paper..even in the essay, pub ad, history paper…i always kept a calculator during every paper in case i needed it…
      5. there’s no single pa book which covers the whole syllabus…kindly go through the books i have suggested…for topics not covered/ inadequately covered, u have to refer to the net and ask others…i asked pavan sir if i wasnt sure of wht to write on a given topic…

  13. raju says:

sir ……mighty post……message is pretty clear i think…….read limited ..but to such a depth where u can use it ……thanks

  14. Gokul says:

    Hi anay
How did you do the first question in GS paper 1 (the one with quotations). Is there any book that gives such quotations?

    • anaydwivedi says:

      hi gokul
as i have pointed out earlier in the gs mains post, there’s no need to remember (and for an avg person neither is it possible to do so) each and every quote or who said wht…i attempted the question according to wht knowledge i had…just try to understand wht the comment is on and write all the developments tht took place which u knw about…
i heard the quotations were taken frm a book by sumit sarkar if i remember correctly…kindly ask rashmita panda…she’s the best person to guide u in this regard…

      • Gokul says:

Hey thanks for the reply. I dont intend to learn the quotes but maybe just go through them. May i know who rashmita is?
Returning to that qn, it is asked to explain based on the context. While the second quote could be guessed as Gandhi’s and context was clear, the remaining two are not so clear. The first one:
“Many Englishmen honesty consider themselves the
trustees for India and yet to what a condition they have
        reduced our country”
This statement could have come at any point in our national movement (maybe during the initial phase of congress or during some national movement or even during the partition). So how did you approach it. You just generally explained the statement?

On a different note, thanks a lot for that post on India year book. I had decided not to go through it. But i m doing now. Now I know it would have been a big mistake if i hadnt

      • anaydwivedi says:

rashmita panda…air 13…http://wwwrashmitapanda.blogspot.com…she had history as an optional (scored 356)…so i m sure she knows the books/sources frm where u can get good basic info…
the statement “many englishmen…our country” is very simple…i came across the term ‘white man’s burden’ in school…in fact it was the 1st question i faced in 10th boards as social science was the 1st paper…look up wikipedia…i started frm there…then moved on to incidents where britishers tried to show they were taking steps for betterment of society, whereas in reality, it was the other way round…eg setting up factories, exporting raw material, permanent settlement, ryotwari and mahalwari systems, passing budgets and laws like the vernacular press act, etc…then i named some people: dufferin, curzon, etc who did more harm than good…and some who did more good than harm, but were an exception…like bentick, rippon, cotton, ao hume, etc
so…its abt writing wht u knw..rather than leaving it blank assuming it asks for exact knowledge…

all the best…hope i answered ur query as per ur expectation…feel free to ask questions…

    • Gokul says:

Thanks anay. That has cleared my doubt

  15. Viraj Deshpande says:

Hi anay, could you please elaborate how did you prepare Geography for G.S.?

  16. himanshu says:

anay sir plz help me on covering th psycho syllabus and th way u follow wth books and topic search on net..plz plz write a post on ur blog abt psycho

    • anaydwivedi says:

      hi himanshu
with books…just see the index and find out which chapter might contain info on the particular topic…then look up wikipedia and finally other sites through google and yahoo search…i dont know how i can explain it in any other way…wht i will do is ask a friend whom i gave some of my notes to scan a particular topic i made notes on…will post them on the blog…but wait for sometime…remind me in 3-4 days…

  17. Prem says:

hi anay… regarding 2 marker do we need to give heading ? or can we straight forward start giving ans..

    like
    2. Write about the following (not exceeding 20 words each)
    a) Haileybury College

  18. Gokul says:

Hey anay one more doubt. I couldnt understand what we were supposed to study under the following topics

    1. ‘Antidevelopment thesis’ in Development Dynamics
    2. State theories and public policy formulation in public policy

Can you explain what exactly are we supposed to study?

Then, while writing mains, especially gs, should we go in the numerical order or is it enough that we get the numbers right?

    • anaydwivedi says:

hi gokul…anti-dev thesis is about theories which oppose the Western model of development…the basic premise is that developing nations are following the West and this is never going to end as what the West is today, developing nations will be tomorrow…but tomorrow, the West would have moved ahead…so developing nations are always going to lag…an example is environment related topics…the development which we r undergoing is polluting the environment…the West did it in the 20th century…and by following their model of deveopment we are going to do it in the 21st century…so anti-dev thesis calls for alternate ways to develop…
even old localism and new localism r part of it…as traditionally, dev means top-down approach…where the better-off lead and others follow…but new localism states tht there has to be co-operation and harmony between the stakeholders…no matter where they stand in society…
i hope u got the basic idea…search the net…u will get much more than this…another example which i think is relevant here is the global happiness index proposed by the then bhutanese king jigme singye wangchuk…look up wikipedia if u dnt knw abt it…
as far as i knw…State theories and public policy formulation in public policy are nothing but the models given in nicholas henry…go thru them…

i didnt understand the last query…do u mean to say answering question no 1 2 3 serially or according to ur convenience? if thts the query, u have to answer those questions 1st abt which u r confident and so on…only sub-parts need to be together…ie 1 a b c have to be together…4 a b c together…

Thanks anay. You had got my second qn right. About ‘state theories…’, the models that you suggested are already a part of the syllabus as ‘Models of public policy and their critique’. So are you sure that you need to just do the models part and leave it?

    Hello sir,
Do i need to buy printed material of Pathak sir, ( i have his class notes of 2008 and i reside near pune so it’d take time in ordering them.)

For geography i’ve got new edition (2009) NCERT books of physical environment and land, people economy but it seemed to me, all the themes weren’t covered completely. Thus i’ve to follow the same book or old edition books as sm ppl suggested.

    Thanx in advance.

sir hw do i reduce IYB to 1/10th of its size…………plz if possible cn u just explain it by taking any TOPIC from IYB…………n writing a note on the same……….sorry if i hve asked too much 2 help……………….

    • anaydwivedi says:

hi mehul…i m sorry i do not have iyb now…and to be honest it’s difficult to explain here…
the basic point is tht u have to mark the imp lines and write the points briefly…
eg the national fruit of india…whtever is given…i wud just write…natl fruit: mango(manigifera indica)..rich source of Vit A,C and D…thts it…so 7-8 lines r reduced to few words…

  25. Dreamz says:

    Hi Anay,
An out of the way doubt..
    1. Did u waste some time during may-oct span to watch TV ,Gym etc?
I ask becoz I do waste abt 2-3 hrs on all non-study related stuff..

    • anaydwivedi says:

      hi there..
as i said..i studied 4 hrs a day on an avg…so of course i did many other things…i did go to the gym daily..tht too 1.5 hrs of exercise + half an hour gng and coming…i stopped roaming arnd only a week before the mains…
also watched 1 movie every day with friends (flat-mates)…or eating out, etc…so even i spent 6-7 hours on other things…u can ask my friends if u dnt believe me…hehe

  26. suraj says:

from which book did you started preparing for pub ad because me from engg background i will have to start from basic so pls advice

    • anaydwivedi says:

i suggest u start with fadia and fadia…admin theories and concepts…for paper 1…and for paper 2..fadia and fadia…indian administration…these r both the basic as well as the main books which u need to refer for pub ad…

  27. Dreamz says:

    Hey Anay,
I do believe in you thats why I follow your blog and advice as well .. 🙂
I am worried because sometimes things get unmanagable ..e.g. CSC magazine ..it takes me around a week or may be more to finish it..that too I find it useless sometimes..
Anyways, for PubAd paper 1 ..which one u suggest ..Sadana Sharma or Fadia ?

    take care

    hey sir,
i am presently three years behind the scene i.e. the CSE.i had already started working on the same.will an insightful reading of ES and IYB help me even at the later stage barring the numerical information?what, according to u should a novice start with in pubad?

    with regards,
    AMOD ANKIT

    • anaydwivedi says:

yup, ES and IYB are good as far as cse is concerned…esp IYB…
there r only 3 main books for pub ad as i have mentioned in the post…u can start with any 1 of them…but go according to the mains syllabus…

  30. Mehul sharma says:

    gud eve sir………..
sir m i suppose to read n learn the tables given in IYB…………I mean the tables lyk survey reports………..regarding population or literacy rate or so…………sir please explain………..wat m i suppose to do with these tables……..

  31. amod ankit says:

    good morning sir,
i didnt congratulate you on your grandeur success in the earlier post.
so,HEARTY CONRATULATIONS on your selection to the elite service and that too with perfection-AIR-5.
there are certain queries on which i need help from your side:-
this one ,for being a long query ,i am sorry.but,i hope you will address them without fail as you have been doing it since inception.

1)as you said in your post that the important cases should be remembered viz golaknath, keshava bharti etc,i wanted to know how could we know which case is important or not? i have a book on ‘our constitution’ by subhash c kashyap and ‘our parliament’ by subhash c kashyap.will they serve any fruitful purpose in the polity preparation of gs?

2)i am bit confused on how to handle CSC magazine.if u could provide me some pointers regarding the undergiven issue ,it will be highly helpful for me.
a)as you said ,there is no need to cover the articles which are too specific to a place or the likes.
regarding the june issue, could you plz let me know which articles need to be studied and which are to be neglected and the reason of choice so that it would be henceforth easy for me to choose the same.
    they are:-
    SAARC@25
    BRIC
    MISSION GLSV-D3
    E-WASTE IN INDIA
    ULIP CONTROVERSY
    MOTIONS IN PARLIAMENT
    INDO-CHINA
    CONTEMPORARY CHINA
    RESURGENCE OF CHINA

    b)regarding contemporary social issues
    REGIONALISM
    MINIORITIES
    CHILD LABOUR
    WOMEN RESERVATION
    NAXALISM
    OLD AGE PROBLEM AND REMEDIES
    UNEMPLOYMENT
    DISABILITY
    CORRUPTION IN INDIA
    IPC SEC 377
    DRUG ADDICTION AND ABUSE
also tell me the exact time when should one start reading the CSC very seriously?

3)regarding the preparation of notes,i wanted to ask if one needs to jot down the main points against bullet marks or write question and answers simultaneously?

4)could you please name a good book on previous year’ mains question in gs, pubad and socio keeping in mind they provide with an’ exam oriented answer’ as you said is very important?of course ,there is no use of getting the same for prelims citing the introduction of CSAT.

5)what is the actual name of SPECTRUM book, which u recommended for gs as it is exam centric?as u said, the ncerts doesnt have an exam orientation,so will it be good to start with SPECTRUM book as a novice?also name the book which you suggested for statistics -SPECTRUM(small one;300 pages or so) for mains.

6)my optionals are pubad and socio-so what i need to seek from you is that with what kind of approach newspaper reading would cover my optionals coupled with the gs part?

7)as you mentioned in one of your answer to the queries, the answering technique ie ‘exam oriented answers’ are very pivotal to fetch good marks.kindly provide with an alternate solution to get their answers scrutinized if one doesnot live in delhi.

8)What do you exactly mean when you said that’write telegraphically when content is much more than word limit’?

on a lighter note, your being an engineer just for the sake of back up option too applies to me.also it had provided me great relief when you said that 4-5 hours of decent study could mend the purpose as i can manage to find 4 hours during my ongoing btech days.(on how much busy the engineering students are.!……hehe)

    with regards,
    AMOD ANKIT

    • anaydwivedi says:

      hi amod,
      1. no prob with subhash kashyap…go ahead with it…imp cases r only the ones i already pointed out…rest r useless..nyways with the changing trend, no need to waste time mugging up such things…
      2. i will put up a CSC post later…i dnt have an issue with me…i will get it in the next 4-5 days…remind me after 10th of july…cant tell u this way…have to go through the articles…m busy right now…leaving for US soon, so i will have plenty of time then…
      3. just write the main points…Q/A format will take a lot of time…
      4. there r no good books which provide model answers as far as i knw…
      5. the book i suggested was Spectrum for General Studies for Preliminary exam…it is approx 2000 pages and costs somewhere arnd rs 900…the small one is simply statistics…by spectrum…easily available in delhi…
      6. i suggest u get in touch with tanvi sundriyal…air 6…she will guide u better in this regard as her optionals were the same as urs…http://thecivilservicesdream.blogspot.com
as i said…i never read the newspapers thinking i m studying for gs, psycho or pub ad…just wht is relevant and wht is not…which i have tried to explain with ET and ToI…
      7. sorry, dont knw any other way…i went to delhi for the same reason…
      8. writing telegraphically means instead of writing the whole sentence just write the imp word…for eg abhinav bindra won the olympic gold medal in the 10 m air rifle competition…write abhinav bindra- olympic gold- 10m air rifle.
all the best…do ask for clarification if any doubt persists…

  35. amod ankit says:

    hi sir,
i meant to ask for the publication of books along with their names which provides authentic last ten years mains question papers.
anyways, thank you for all the answers to my queries.
i will surely remind you in 4-5 days about CSC post-their selection of articles once you are in US.

    with regrads,
    AMOD ANKIT

    • anaydwivedi says:

      amod…there r 2 kinds of books available…
      1. question papers r given year-wise
      2. questions are given according to the syllabus…
buy whichever u feel comfy with…

  36. amod ankit says:

    hi sir,
sorry,i meant to ask about the name of book which has authentic collection of last ten year’s mains questions as i couldnot get it from net?

    some queries:-
1)as you pointed out IIPA journals dont serve the purpose,so can we proceed without it?
    also,what does it constitute of?
2)you didnt mention YOJANA and KURUKSHETRA in your reading list, but can we go for them as they are highly acclaimed journals?
3)as you pointed about the book on thinkers-is it the same as mentioned-ADMINISTRATIVE THINKERS-EDITED BY
    -D RAVINDRA PRASAD
    -V S PRASAD
    -P SATHYANARAYANA
4)as i m new to polity, can i know what does the line connotes to-‘keshavanan d bharti v. state of kerala(1973) 4 SSC 225,AIR 1973 SC 1461’ with context to one of the important cases?
    thanks in advance.

    with regards,
    AMOD ANKIT

    • anaydwivedi says:

hi amod…Q papers r given in any book dedicated to Q papers…y will the publication modify them? so u may refer ny 1…
      1. iipa journals r not tht important…they require a lot of time to go thru and less than 5 % is relevant for the exam…they contain case studies, researches, etc done by various professionals…
      2. surely go ahead if u want to…i didnt, thts y i didnt mention them…
      3. yup admin thinkers…blue cover if i remember correctly..i dnt remember the exact names…covers 18 thinkers…starts with kautilya and ends with karl marx and dror…
      4. i dnt have ny idea…must be referring to the case number in SC or sth…not sure…nyways not relevant for the exam…just knw wht the case was abt…it laid down the concept of ‘basic structure’ of the constitution for the 1st time…refer http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basic_structure for more…

  37. amod ankit says:

    hi sir, one more query
will the telegraphic format of answering questions not create an informal look as of you explained in bindra’s case?
did u prepare for CSE while in job?

    with regards,
    AMOD ANKIT

    • anaydwivedi says:

it’s not abt informal look but abt putting as many points in the answer as u can…m not saying do it for every answer…do it when u have lots of content…
i took the 1st attempt in 2007 while i was working and cleared my prelims and mains…thereafter left my job…

  38. amod ankit says:

    hi sir,
i glanced across an article’RBI hikes policy rates by 25 bps in a bid to tame double digit inflation’
whether it deserves a worth read?

    • anaydwivedi says:

rbi keeps hiking/lowering the rates frm time to time…wht u need to knw is wht r the various rates in the hands of rbi to control inflation, etc…not its mvmt across time…

  39. Sangita Goswami says:

    hi anay,

downloaded the pdf version from the site you suggested. As I cud see,the very “contents” caters to all the articles, their description,serially…..Is it the same you were referring in your other post?I mean,is it necessary to go through the chapters in d pdf?

    • anaydwivedi says:

nope…i suggested the “content” where the articles r given serially as an aid to mug up…in the new dd basu…intro to the const…articles arent given serially…and many r missing is wht i am told…so u can refer the pdf index for the articles and refer dd basu for the explanation…it circumvents the need for dd basu’s constitutional law of india which isnt easily available in the market…

  40. Sangita Goswami says:

“Constitution of India” by P.M.Bakshi which is commonly known as ‘Bare Act’ can be treated as the hard copy of the “content/index” of the pdf mentioned above…It can be used if the internet connection is unavailable somewhere….
    Opinion solicited….

  41. amod ankit says:

    hi sir,
there are some queries which i need to be cleared.
THE ENUMERATED ARTICLES BELOW ARE FROM TOI REGARDING WHICH I WANT TO SEEK CLARIFICATION.

1)as you pointed out previously that we need to know about LOKAYUKTA’s resignation and now he has taken back his resignation, how could this stuff be used in answers?

2)this one is from editorial column-‘indian medical skills can’t cure pak’s cancer’ wherein its dealt that india can never remove feeling of anger and anguish against them, regardless of their efforts.so,is it necessary to read these kind of articles in general?i remember that you pointed that in your newspaper posting telling about indo-pak blah blah being of no use?

3)is it vital to know about meltdown reasons in different countries, treaties being signed b/w different nations like of the recent pak-china nuclear ties, which has given serious tremors to india and us?US and poland has signed missile shield pact.is it important?also, are the discussions b/w different nations in important international summits important?

4)is it mandatory to memorize president’s and PM’s name of important countries?
    if yes,which countries ?

5)article ‘a faith in the shared humanity’ deals with the issue that pakistan needs to give more importance to protect the rights of minorities.is it worth reading?

    REGARDING ET.

1)is it important to remember teaser rates of prominent banks or just what it means will suffice?

2)caste census issue(GOM) being headed by pranab mukhrjee.what could be the main points which we need to extract from the article?

3)banking solutions of prominent countries-do we need to give a check?for ex-bank of china aims to increase $8.9 billions for three year capital need.

4)editorial column-article on ‘NEED TO RETHINK GLOBALISATION’
it basically deals with negative effects of globalization and liberalization in india….
some basic points discussed here were:-
-37% people poor according to planning commission.
-average income of saharan region, one of the poorest regions of the world has declined by 2% bcoz of globalization
-unemployment went down from 10% to 4% in US?
-only exception is china, wherein 400 million has been redeemed of poverty.
    -india adversely affected.
so questions-is it necessary to remember the figures of india or for other countries?
do we need to ponder upon the consequences in other countries too?

5)do we need to detailed knowledge about sensex, its functioning etc?

6)china ups the growth estimate for 1%.is it important?

on a last note, the book mentioned by you on statistics-STATISTICAL ANALYSIS AND GRAPHS-BLUE AND WHITE COVER-SPECTRUM-472 PAGES.is it the same?

    thanks in advance….

    with regards,
    AMOD ANKIT

    2)

    • anaydwivedi says:

      1. as far as lokayukta is concerned…when u r writing answers on corruption, or on lokayukta specifically…u can write abt the example of bihar and few other states where the office of lokayukta was forced to become powerless and no action was taken on its recommendations or findings…u may add tht recently differences arose in karnataka as well…the lokayukta’s office was not given enough powers and its findings not taken notice of…and it took only the resignation of lokayukta and wide media attention which made it well knwn throughout the country to mend the differences…etc….so u write abt the issue without taking specific names but presenting the issue of lokayukta vs state govt…
      2. only knw wht those in favour of caste census r saying and those against it r saying…the reasons alone shud form a part of the answer if asked…also some factual data as to when the last caste census was held, etc
3.no it will never be asked…specific question on indian banking itself is never asked…so no chance of foreign countries’ banks being asked…
      4. yes, try to remember the facts…mostly concentrate on india..but yes, do take notice of other countries as well…mark the facts then and there in the article when u read it…and revise it later…
      5. no…only knw wht the sensex is…when it started…how many stocks it comprises of…etc..no need to monitor its mvmt on a day to day basis…
      6. no…china’s growth estimate, etc is not imp…just knw how much their gdp is…trade with india and USA…break-up of manu, services and agri in their gdp…

i m sorry…i dnt remember the exact name of the book…and the cover was green when i bought it…must have changed to blue…it first covers the definitions and theory…and then some sample questions…thereafter it covers the questions asked in the previous yrs…year-wise…

    • anaydwivedi says:

hi amod…i answered the 2nd one…i felt there was nothing new in the article..no facts…
      3. yup, very imp deals and esp those tht have an impact on india r definitely imp…so china-pak is imp…us-poland is also imp as us-russia relations r imp…
      4. nope…not at all required until and unless there has been some incident of intl importance in tht country…like russia- georgia dispute…so knw who was leading georgia…
      5. just get an idea…but it’s not tht imp as a direct question on internal matters of pak wud be unusual…

knw…just knw wht ‘teaser rate’ is…absolutely no need to knw the numbers for diff banks…

  47. Harsh says:

    Hey Anay,
Thanks for your awesome blog. Can you tell me which chapters from Bipan Chandra you left out altogether?
    Best

      hi harsh…
i m sorry, i dnt have bipin chandra right now…and i m in the US…else wud have asked my frnd whom i gave the book to tell me the chapters i left…(i didnt mark nething in those chapters)…
      but if i remember correctly, there was a chapter on kisan mvmts…i m sure i left it…others i dnt remember…but there were hardly 2-3 chapters i left…

  48. snehasish says:

    hey Anay,
for constitution in G.S mains I follow the book of M.V Pylee of S Chand publications. is it okay to follow this book? I do have D.D Basu, but it is a old one [2001]. which book I should follow?
kindly can you suggest me how to make notes on economics? I read the book of Dutta and Sundaram.

    • anaydwivedi says:

      hi snehasish…
u can refer any book as long as u r comfortable with it…i dnt knw abt the pylee book…so cant comment on it…
for economics…since u said u read dutt and sundaram..so make notes according to wht u felt was imp for the exam…
i referred the newspapers and internet for psych as i have explained in the newspapers post…

  49. snehasish says:

    thanks for your reply Anay.
another thing that I want to know is that is it necessary to join any of the coaching institutes? In Kolkata where I am from there are no such reputed coaching institutes. my financial condition is also not so well. so only option left for me is self study. I have no problem to work hard, but there is no mentor or guidance available who can show me the right path and can correct my mistakes….. can you help me out of this situation?

    • anaydwivedi says:

      hi snehasish
coaching is not essential for the basic prep…it has to be done thru self-study…
but one must get an idea of wht is relevant for the exam by gng thru the question papers of previous yrs…
after u r confident tht u have covered the topics in the syllabus…answer-writing practice is required…for tht…i m afraid coaching might help…
but then its a double edged sword…if it doesnt work…might do more harm than good…
so be confident of ur abilities without worrying too much about the constraints and give it ur best!!!

  51. kumar says:

    hi sir,
a]you had earlier mentioned on an enquiry about the chapters that could be left out from Bipin chandra..2-3 may be ,since you were in US,just a reminder..
b]also sir is it absolutely necessary to go through the spectrum GS or couldn’t we rather follow the books as suggested by you for our prelims 2011..and revise them
c]also briefly could sir outline a typical schedule for studying..
    thanks in advance..sincerely- kumar

    • anaydwivedi says:

      hi kumar
      a. i m still in the US…so u will have to remind me again…sorry for tht
      b. i revised spectrum GS 2-3 times…rather than reading NCERTs, etc i just referred spectrum…basics r imp
      c. schedule of study depends on the individual…i m not the right person to ask as this was my 3rd attempt, so i had already gone thru most of the books…and didnt study more than 4-5 hrs a day during any of my attempts…

  52. gokul1988 says:

    Hey anay
can u tell me how dis question should be answered? (GS 2008)
The principal exports of india in a year is given in the table:
    Agriculture 29312
    Minerals 4736
    Manufactured goods 161161
    Fuels 10411
    Others 3398
    Represent using a suitable diagram

This table can be represented in a number of ways like bar charts, pie diagram etc. My question is which method we should opt for. Seeing the values, pie diagram would be a better option i feel. If there are any specific rule of thumb (wrt method) to attempt similar questions, please share that also

    Thanks in advance

    Gokul

    • anaydwivedi says:

      hi gokul
yup, i remember the Q and i made a pie diagram for it…which diagram u have to make depends on ur convenience…
only thing to remember is (and if i recall it correctly) whether they have asked to represent it using a suitable diagram or a suitable graph…i dont have my notes with me and i dont remember most of the things…but certainly pie diagram for this Q is wht i drew in the exam…

  53. gokul1988 says:

    Thanks anay 🙂

but I am not able to get it. Kindly help me out.
    Thanx.

    • anaydwivedi says:

      hi garima
yup, even i cudnt find it recently…i guess they removed it or mayb it’s smwhere difficult to reach on the site…
u can just search for the syllabus on google or yahoo…many online forums and coaching institutes’ websites have it…

    • Prashant tembhare says:

      Hello Garima……
This is on behalf of anay………u can get the details syllabus on upscportal web site……
      plz chk
      thanks

  55. gokul1988 says:

I didnt know that…i thot we have to draw it in d answer sheet…that would have been quite time consuming….thanks for the info anay

  56. dolfin says:

    hello anay,
really great help! so nice of you.
especially csc july 2010 analysis, economic survey.
can u direct in the same way for yojna and kurukshetra mag too?
also if u can give link or any contact means of a goegraphy aspirant, it would be a great help!

    regards.

  57. gokul1988 says:

    hey anay
how did you answer q.no 11(b) in GS-2 2009…..the qn asks us to show it in a diagram…a sub divided bar diagram would be huge and tedious while a line graph would make it easy….should we stick on to bar diagrams (0r pie diagram, the case may be) whenever it is asked ‘show using diagrams’ or can we use line graphs also?

    • anaydwivedi says:

      hi gokul
i drew simple bar diagram…yup, the Q represents perfectly the need to improvise… the Q is one of the easiest ones but the only catch is to not waste time…so i drew the diagram on a graph paper but took such a scale tht the bars were hardly 2-3 cms long…tht way i cud finish it quickly…shading, etc neednt be done with scale, etc… i did it freehand…
this way i finished the statistics section in less than 35 mins…

      • Gokul says:

ya i shud try to reduce the size of the diagram….i was practicing previous qn papers and it was taking more than 45 minutes….thanks anay

  58. kumar says:

Reminder note Anay sir -regarding,chapters in Bipin chandra that could be skipped..thanks in advance..

  59. Phoenix says:

    Hi Anay,

Did you take any prelims test series for GS?
Do you have any online test series to suggest? I had subscribed to visionias online test series last time around. But dint do them regularly. This time i have no choice but to do many tests to actually get good confidence for GS.
The portions i dint prepare for Prelims 2010 was general science and economy and it costed me very dearly.
For general science will spectrum suffice or should i be reading ncert’s for some base knowledge. if i can opt reading for ncert which ones should i refer?

    Best Regards…

    • anaydwivedi says:

      hi there…
no, i didn’t join any coaching, test series or postal guidance for prelims in all 3 attempts…
i m sorry, i dnt have any idea abt online test series…i didn’t go thru the ncerts…but for basic knowledge, spectrum wud b more than enough…
for economy…newspapers r the best sources…mark and look up terms on the net if u don’t knw abt them….

      • suraj says:

Sir is spectrum Good for GS Mains and pls let me know which r those books because there is no single spectrum book as of GS Prilims .
        pls Suggest me sir

      • anaydwivedi says:

        hi suraj
spectrum is good for basics…so once u have done it for the prelims…there r many Qs in the mains where u can use the data u came across in spectrum…
neednt do it again for the mains…but in the exam usually recall isnt tht difficult if u do it well for the prelims…
i have provided the link for the book in the post…i guess it’s available in the market…

  63. Pallavi says:

    Hi Anay,
    Congratulations on ur achievement…
I am totally under confusion on how to proceed with the economy preparation for both prelims and mains. So,can you please provide me some tips on this and if possible, could you explain me the strategy you have followed.
Please mention the books as well that should be read for economy(both mains and prelims)

    Thanks…

    • anaydwivedi says:

      hi pallavi…thanks
do not worry too much abt economics…its just a psychological fear…nothing else…
just go thru the newspapers reguarly…go thru the newspaper reading post to understand how i covered the terms and concepts i came across on the net…
as for the books…i referred only the books i have mentioned in the gs mains post…didnt refer any particular book for economics…eco survey is more abt facts and data than economics…
but if u feel the need for a reference book…dutt and sundaram is good…but no need to read the whole book…just refer when u have doubts…

  64. manoj jadhav says:

sir plz give about plan to cope with the economices for pre &main paper

    • anaydwivedi says:

      hi there…
do not worry so much abt economics…just go thru the newspapers regularly and look up the terms u cant understand on the net…
apart frm tht go thru economic survey as i have mentioned in one of my posts on reading the books…
